Why Did God Allow Slavery?

Atheists often cast a particular aspect of God’s law in the face of believers, saying that if He really was a good God, then why did he allow slavery? There are many answers that have been given, but the problem is, they usually are along the lines of “it was good for that time and culture” or “that system was better than everyone around them.”

When does the Biblical Day Start?

Our Gregorian system has the day starting at midnight, there are proponents for the day starting at sunset, others say nightfall, there are those who hold that the day starts at sunrise or with the morning dawn. So what is the answer? When does the Biblical day start?

Obey God

James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

This should be one of the most obvious truths in the whole Bible. As His people, we are instructed to obey God "that it may be well with thee." We also obey to show our love for Him and in appreciation that He "first loved us."

God Delegates Authority

This was originally a response letter to a brother who is questioning some of the big picture of keeping Old Testament commandments. I de-personalized it and made some references easier for the random reader to understand.

Dear Brother,

First, you didn’t go into much detail to when saying the law was temporary so I won’t go into much detail responding on that point. It sounds like you aren’t really interested in a detail by detail discussion of the theology anyway. So I’ll just mention what came to mind on the topic of the law being temporary.

Just the Tip

Colossians 3:19 Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.

Romans 12:9 Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.

1 John 4:7 ¶ Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

The scripture commands us, as husbands, to love our wives. The command is plain and straightforward, but it is like the tip of an iceberg.

Hosea: 2:19 And I will betroth thee unto me for ever; yea, I will betroth thee unto me in righteousness, and in judgment, and in lovingkindness, and in mercies.
20 I will even betroth thee unto me in faithfulness: and thou shalt know Yahweh.

How important is marriage and betrothal? Besides being the foundation of the family structure, marriage is the picture of our relationship with Christ. The way we arrive at our true marriage to Christ, according to the scripture, is through betrothal. Because our marriages are pictures of the divine marriage, we should expect that our earthly marriages will work better the closer we are able to replicate it.
